A “Vile, Lying” Group And Moser’s Non-Answer

Jerry C. Brewer

During the lectureship of the Sunny Slope church in Paducah, Kentucky on July 15, 2006, the following question was submitted during the Open Forum, that was moderated by Gary Colley: “In view of all that has been written over the last year in widely distributed brotherhood publications, would brothers Cates or Moser please clarify whether the leadership of Memphis School of Preaching supports Dave Miller as director of Apologetics Press.”

Curtis Cates, who was then director of the Memphis School of Preaching (MSOP), responded first. After “spinning” his reply, he was followed by Keith Moser who ignored the question, attacked the one who submitted it, and everyone else who dares to question MSOP’s fellowship with error. He said,

This statement is typed. Which means the brother or sister had it made up before they got here. I call those ‘set up questions.’ …I teach logic and this is the kind of question that says, ‘have you stopped beating your wife?’ It doesn’t matter what we say. Somebody’s going to write about us. I’ve been preaching for 42 years, brethren, and I stand right where I stood 42 years ago. And my friends will believe that and my enemies won’t. But these people are as vile a group—and I do mean vile—as I have ever read after in my life. I have never seen the kind of attitude they have. They want to destroy about nine good works in the brotherhood just prove a point. And I want to tell all of you in public. This isn’t about Dave Miller. This is not about Dave Miller. I went to school with Dave Miller. I sat in the classes in the graduate school as he and I fought those liberal professors together. He’s the only one that stood with me. …Just call him and see where he stands. But if you’re going to believe some of these publications, you’re going to have a problem, because those brethren are lying to you.

Some of these publications” include Contending For The Faith and Defender—publications which MSOP students are now forbidden to read—and “those brethren” who, “are lying to you” include David P. Brown, Michael Hatcher, and Dub McClish—and a host of others, including this writer, who believe Second John 9-11. To Keith Moser, “…these people [who] are as vile a group—and I do mean vile—as I have ever read after in my life” are obviously worse than a “basket of deplorables.”

I-Teach-Logic” Moser refused to logically answer the question, choosing instead to make an ad hominem attack against the questioner: “This statement is typed. Which means the brother or sister had it made up before they got here. I call those ‘set up questions.’” What difference does it make whether it was typed beforehand or handwritten just before it was handed to the moderator? A “set up question?” Here it is again:

In view of all that has been written over the last year in widely distributed brotherhood publications, would brothers Cates or Moser please clarify whether the leadership of Memphis School of Preaching supports Dave Miller as director of Apologetics Press?

Moser’s response? “…this is the kind of question that says, ‘have you stopped beating your wife?’ That would be a “set up” if the questioner did not know that a man was a wife beater. But if it was publicly known that he beat his wife, it would not fall into the “set up question” category. That was the case when the question was asked. It was (and still is) publicly known that Curtis Cates, Keith Moser, Garland Elkins, Barry Grider, Billy Liddell, B. J. Clarke, Billy Bland, the rest of the MSOP faculty and staff, and the elders of the Forest Hill church in Memphis remained in fellowship with Miller after he unscripturally taught and practiced elder reevaluation and reaffirmation at Brown Trail in Fort Worth.

I have been asked the same kind of question about my own fellowship practices and always gave an answer, without impugning the questioner’s motives as a “set up.” But the question—which could have simply been answered with a “yes” or “no—did not fit the agenda of MSOP so, he called it a “set up”—a silly (and illogical) statement. The “set up” was Moser’s “vile, lying” straw man, that he built and destroyed, through a multitude of words in his non-answer—a diversionary tactic. His statement that, “This is not about Dave Miller” was another diversion. The questioner did not ask about Dave Miller, but about the fellowship practice of MSOP and Moser raved, ranted, impugned motives, surmised, and clarified nothing. Quite a feat for a teacher of logic.
